How VoIP Works

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) works by taking a conventional analogue telephone signal and converting it into IP (Internet Protocol) packets containing digital signals. Once in packet form the data can be transmitted over the Internet. As well as providing the ability to call other VoIP users, phone calls can also be routed from the Internet to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), allowing you to communicate with normal landline and mobile phones. The process works the same in reverse and calls made from a standard landline, or mobile, can be transmitted to a VoIP user.
