Open Transport / PPP is the new PPP modem dialler from Apple.

It comes as part of the Mac OS 7.6 and can be used with System Software 7.5.3 or higher.

It works alongside TCP/IP 1.1 so you need the field Connect Via set to PPP Server within TCP/IP.

To load OT/PPP, go to Apple : Control Panel, and select PPP.

You will see the following window:

opentrans

Enter your hostname and password in the relevant text boxes.

From the Toolbar, you will be able to select Modem, TCP/IP and the Activity Log.

To look at the Modem Properties go to PPP...Modem. You will see the following Dialog Box appear:

opentrans1

In the Connect Via box, you will need to set either Modem Port or Modem/Printer Port.

In the Modem box you need to select the modem that fits or is the closest to the one that you have connected to your computer.

An incorrect selection could result in the modem not initialising properly or not at all.

If you are not sure about the type of modem that you are using, either contact the supplier where it was purchased, or you could try using Supra modems. On a Macintosh these can be used as the default to start up your modem.

When you have completed all the fields, click on the Close Box and you will go back to the initial PPP Dialog Box.

Next you need to select the options button, the result will be the following screen appearing:

opentrans2

You will be confronted with five selectable boxes of which numbers one/three and five need to be selected.

Once you have done this, you need to select the Protocols Tab.

opentrans3

There are only three boxes to choose from here. Normally you will only need to select boxes one and two.

In the eventuality that your modem is not initialising properly, you might need to select the third box, which allows you to import a Modem Connection Script that should have been supplied with your modem (probably on a CD or a floppy disk); or you could try logging on using a terminal window to see if you can diagnose any problems you might be encountering.

Then click OK.
