Physical Connections
If you are having difficulty connecting to the Internet via your ADSL router, you first need to establish whether the problem is Internal (the connection between your computer and the ADSL router) rather than External (the connection between your ADSL router and the Internet).

Troubleshooting Internal connectivity - LED lights (link lights)
|
On most devices, the Ethernet ports on the NIC have two lights which are sometimes referred to as ‘link lights’. What these lights specifically indicate varies from device to device. However, if neither of the LEDs are illuminated then this would signify that there is no physical Ethernet connection. This could mean that your equipment is faulty, or otherwise that the wrong kind of cable is being used, or that the cable is damaged. To diagnose what the problem is you may need to:
- Ensure the computer is turned on.
- Ensure the ADSL router is powered up.
- Disconnect any other Ethernet devices such as ‘hubs’ and connect the ADSL router directly to the network interface card on the computer.
- Use the cable provided, or try another cable for test purposes.
- Ensure that the NIC is working properly and has not been disabled in the operating system (in Windows this would be in 'device manager').
