ADSL Troubleshooting

Prerequisites
The main difference between an ADSL modem and an ADSL router is the way you connect it to your computer. Normally a modem would connect to your computer’s USB port, whereas a router would connect via ‘Ethernet cable’ to a Network Interface Card (unless connecting to a wireless router).

|
So the first thing you need to check before purchasing a router is whether your computer has a NIC (Network Interface Card). Look on the back of your computer for a RJ45 socket – it is a little larger than a RJ11 socket (US style telephone socket), and is more square than a UK style telephone socket. If needed you can upgrade your computer with a NIC.
|
You will also need a ‘Cat5’ Ethernet cable to connect your computer’s NIC to the ADSL router – one will usually be supplied with the router. If an ethernet cable is not provided, or it is not long enough for your needs, they can easily be purchased from your local computer store.
