Introduction
The World Wide Web is offering you a great opportunity. More and more people are discovering how a Web site gives their business the publicity and marketing boost they have been looking for. Having a Web site means you can tell the world about you and your company 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Unlike a hard copy brochure you can update your Web site quickly and easily. Customers, and potential customers, can contact you to ask for more information, leave their details or even order online.

When you ordered your web account, you will have been asked to select a login name and password. We will have suggested a login name which will be between 4 and eight letters, usually the first eight letters of your site name, although a slightly different version of your site name could be accepted. Your password should preferably be eight characters long and made up of a random mix of letters, numbers and preferably punctuation marks: if you can say your password, it probably isn't secure enough! You should keep this password secret; anyone who knows your password and login name can log into the server and modify your files. If you cannot log in, or if your password becomes compromised, please telephone Web Support on 0845 272 2555 (available 24 hours). Further advice regarding passwords can be found at www.demon.net/toolkit/webpassword

Demon Web space is rented on the basis that you maintain your own Web site, and it is important that you take time to understand the procedures for uploading, copying and maintaining your pages. It is useful to take the time to learn how the site works.

If you are interested in more advanced features you should also learn some perl and the handling of CGI scripts. There are tutorials available on-line which can help to get you started with this.

The servers run an Apache Web Server, on a Solaris Unix based platform. More information with regards to Apache is available from www.apache.org.
