Environment information
The commercial web servers run Apache web server software on Solaris Unix based platforms. We do not have any Microsoft NT web solutions.

Not supported
This is a list of the most common things that are unfortunately not supported by Demon's commercial web service:

  • Microsoft Frontpage Server Extensions - required for using Frontpage to upload and maintain online your web pages
  • Server Side Includes (SSI)
  • Secure Socket Layer (SSL) - for secure credit card transactions. More information can be found under Security and Secure Ordering in the Advanced Features section.
  • Database systems - except when written in Perl.
  • Search engine systems

Facilities
You are able to make use of Counters, Imagemaps, and also htaccess, which allows you to make use of User Authentication, and also the ability to update and use your own MIME types.

Logs
Unless you state otherwise when you place your order you will only get summary logs; these show you the number of hits you have had and how much bandwidth you have used. Access logs plus access logs and referrer information are also available on request.

More details on logs can be found in the Quick Start - Facilities pages under Logs.

To analyse your logs you may want to use a program like Analog or Wusage.

Registering your web site with search engines
You can publicise your site by having it added to the various Web indexes. Most of the popular search engines, such as Yahoo, Alta Vista, Webcrawler and G.O.D. will include your site in their listings without charge, and have an "Add URL" link for you to register your site with them online. There are also sites such as http://www.submit-it.com/ which will submit your URL to multiple sites for you.

Please note that you will need to do this yourself, as this is not a service provided by Demon.

Changing your account details
If you wished to change either your account details, or the password for your Commercial Web Space, we require written confirmation on headed stationary - this can either be faxed, or posted to ourselves.

Requests for a password change, should be sent our Web Support dept. on 020 8371 1245. They should include either the URL or username for your site and also the new password you wish to have. This must be between six and eight characters in length, and should contain both upper and lower case letters, at least one numerical digit; with no English words, or any names.

Backup policy
Demon takes regular backups of its web servers so that data can be recovered in a disaster situation. These backups are not available for our users, and we are unable to recover individual users files.

Disk space usage
As a user you should make sure that you do not use more web space than the quota you are paying for.

To find out how much Web space you are using use the du (Disk Usage) command:

du -sk docs

This will give you the number of 1Kb blocks that your pages occupy. Please keep this within your payment limits; if you exceed your payment range (for example, by using more than 10000 blocks on a Showroom 10 account) you will be billed for the extra space used.
