What's new

1. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.07

  1. Turnpike Six is now compatible with Windows Vista.
  2. Turnpike Six will now support up to 250 concurrent users without the need for a Multi-user Site Key and irrespective of the type of Site ID in use.
  3. The space allowed for Kill Rules and Mailbox Rules has been increased from 8 kilobytes each to 32 kilobytes each.
  4. As a security enhancement, Turnpike now installs its executable files in a subdirectory of the main Turnpike directory (e.g. “C:\Program Files\Turnpike\Bin”). Note that any shortcuts to Connect that you have will need to be updated to reference the new location. Any toolbar buttons that are configured in Turnpike Connect to use external programs located in the Turnpike directory will also need to be updated.
  5. The installer will now automatically set Turnpike to be the default Mail program, default News program and default Addressbook. If, after running Windows Update in the future, you find that Turnpike is no longer the default, the installer can be run again to correct the situation.

Fixes

  1. The handling of image data has been enhanced to support some very rare forms of JPEG files and EXIF files.
  2. Updated call costs tariff files.
BT SurfTime tariffs for SurfTime discounts discontinued.
    Call rates in:
BT (0844 04) SurfTime Evenings and Weekends (BTG5STEW.CST)
    BT (0844 04) SurfTime Anytime (BTG5STAT.CST)
    are now the same as:
    BT (0844 04) (BTG5.CST)

2. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.06

Spelling Checker

We are no longer able to supply the International ProofReader text proofing software used in previous versions of Turnpike Six. For Turnpike Six v6.06, International ProofReader is replaced by the Sentry Spelling-Checker Engine from Wintertree Software Inc. Foreign language dictionaries are no longer supplied. The user interface to spelling checker functionality is unchanged.

This change will not affect existing Turnpike users as they have an indefinite licence to use their copy of the International ProofReader text proofing software together with the associated dictionaries. The Turnpike Six v6.06 installer will not remove the International ProofReader dictionaries nor the DLL file that is used to drive that spelling checker.

When spell checking, Turnpike Six v6.06 will continue to use the International ProofReader text proofing software if it is available, otherwise Turnpike will use the Sentry Spelling-Checker engine.

Fixes

  1. New file type added to "executable" list, for which an
alert is displayed when an attachment is "viewed". List
now stands at ade, bas, bat, cmd, com, cpl, dll, exe,
hta, inf, ins, isp, js, jse, mdb, mde, msi, msp, mst,
pif, scf, scr, sct, shb, shs, wmf, wsc, wsf, wsh, url,
    vb, vbe, vbs.
  2. Turnpike can now verify "PGP" signed messages that have
been signed with subkeys. PGP itself does not sign
messages in this way but GPG (commonly used on Unix
systems) may do. Turnpike will only check these
signatures when PGP7 or later is installed.
  3. Updated call costs tariff files.
  4. Changed BT residential tariffs for increased minimum call charge:
BT - Basic Rate (local calls) (BTBASIC.CST)
    BT Friends and Family (BTFFR.CST)
    BT Bestfriend (BTBEST.CST)
    BT Together (BTTOG.CST)
BT Together Friends and Family (BTTOGFF.CST)
    BT Together BestFriend (BTTOGBF.CST)
    BT (0844 09) (BTG4.CST)
    BT (0844 09) Friends and Family (BTG4FF.CST)
    BT (0844 09) BestFriend (BTG4BF.CST)
    BT (0844 04) (BTG5.CST)
BT (0844 04) SurfTime Evenings and Weekends (BTG5STEW.CST)

3. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.05

Fixes

  1. JPEG validator incorrectly rejected some valid jpeg files.
  2. New file types added to "executable" list, for which an alert is
displayed when an attachment is "viewed". List now stands at ade,
bas, bat, cmd, com, cpl, dll, exe, hta, inf, ins, isp, js, jse,
mdb, mde, msi, msp, mst, pif, scf, scr, sct, shb, shs, wsc, wsf,
    wsh, url, vb, vbe, vbs.
  3. Scripted login with debuginfo password masking failed. When using scripted login with Win9X and debug info on ***** was inserted in each logged send and match line and the clear text password still showed. Affected transcript in Connect dialog, log window and log
    files if kept.
  4. In login scripts repeated special characters in login or password were not properly escaped. Escaping of 4 special chars: " ' \ % in login or password corrupted the word if the same special char appeared more than once.
  5. New and updated call costs tariff files.

AutoSelect Daytime start

Dialup users on BT residential or Telewest cable lines who use
Autoselect may wish to make this change in CONNECT.INI to set the
new daytime start at 06:00 on weekdays:

  • Ensure that Connect is not running.
  • Backup the file CONNECT.INI found in the Turnpike directory (usually c:\Program Files\Turnpike\)
  • Open the file CONNECT.INI with a text editor (e.g. Wordpad).
  • Find the line:

    [AUTOSELECT]

(Or if there is no such line add it at the end of the file.)

  • Immediately following that line insert a new line:

    DayStart=360

  • Save CONNECT.INI and restart Connect.

4. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.04

  1. Recently (September 2004), Microsoft have announced a fix for "critical" security issue (MS04-0028), which related to the display of JPEG images in a wide range of their software. Malicious images are now starting to circulate that exploit the underlying problem, with a view to spreading "viruses" or leaving machines open to other attacks.

Turnpike does not use Microsoft's JPEG viewer, however, the malicious images do affect the third-party image display software incorporated within Turnpike. Although it does not seem that the specific Microsoft-targeted exploit works (i.e. there's no virus infection or insecurity left behind), any attempt to view one of the malicious images will cause Turnpike to immediately crash (viz: immediately shut down). Turnpike Six v6.04 fixes this problem.

  2. Changes to alert - "Viewing" an attachment may constitute a security risk This alert will now be displayed when using an external program (the "viewer" button) for viewing any attachment. Previously this alert was not shown for image attachments.

5. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.03

  1. Support for PGP 8. Although we are no longer shipping PGP, Turnpike Six will automatically detect and use PGP if it is available on your machine. Turnpike Six v 6.03 supports PGP versions 5, 6, 7 and 8. Installing Turnpike Six v 6.03 will not affect any previously installed PGP.

  2. To indicate that a folder contains unread messages its icon in the explorer bar is now emboldened. This change has been introduced because some versions of Windows Explorer do not embolden the names of folders that contain unread messages.

  3. The "site-signature", the string of characters Turnpike puts in the User-agent: header, is now randomized. This is in response to users who didn't want their messages to be so easily identified. The site-signature is used by Turnpike to identify your postings to newsgroups. This change is backwards, but not forwards, compatible, i.e. if you post using Turnpike Six v6.03 but receive the article using an earlier version it will not be recognized as being by you - there are no other detrimental effects.
  4. New alert - "Viewing" an attachment may constitute a security risk

This is displayed when "viewing" attachments that Turnpike neither recognises as being executable nor recognizes as being "probably" safe to view. Warnings for executable attachments are as before. File types that do not activate this new alert are PGP files (.asc, .pgp), some image files (.bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tif, .tiff), .txt and .pdf.

  5. Visual Networks' IP InSight has been removed.

  6. Connect's Initial Setup has two new choices for Demon Broadband users:

"I wish to use an external connection to my existing Demon Broadband account"

"I wish to use Dial Companion for remote access to my existing Demon Broadband account"

These invoke the two new ISP scripts: "Demon Broadband", "Demon Dial Companion for Broadband", which are also available to existing Turnpike users (by using the More... button when selecting an ISP).

  7. New "--- Custom ISP Script ---"

Use this instead of "--- Unknown access provider ---" (kept for compatibility) at initial setup or later, if there is not a ready-made script for your ISP available.

The advantages of the new custom script are:

    • Can be used to setup for any number of ISPs with a user-supplied name for each.
    • Contains several new options and choices, for greater flexibility.
  8. New dialog, Custom PoPs...

A new dialog is provided from Configure > Service Access...

The list of PoP names/numbers for any ISP can be revised here. This is useful for custom ISPs, or with any predefined ISP script where the access phone numbers are now different, or more are available.

  9. For new installations only, the default browse mode timeout for Dial-up connections is increased from 2 minutes to 8 minutes.

  10. Newly created Dial-up connections will default to "Use Turnpike scripting" off (applicable only for Windows 95/98/ME).

  11. Connect's ISP script changes (.acc files in access.tpk):

    New scripts demonbb.acc, demondcb.acc, @custom.acc (as above).

demon.acc: +44 removed from international access numbers (Windows adds the correct prefixes from abroad).

Other scripts: A few out of date PoP numbers fixed (e.g. 071, 081 for London, demontor.acc geographic nos. removed)

  12. Call costs files (.cst files in tariff.tpk):

Call pricing has been updated for the major carriers: BT, NTL & TeleWest.

Fixes:

  • Spurious update of access and tariff files when the clocks change.

  • Problem with POP3 server after rebuild (UIDs reset)

  • Reject unrecognized email names feature can [rarely] reject all mail in a session.

  • Win2k/XP Files don't close when logging out.

  • MDN/PGP key fetch messages GPF if fail.

  • Resend of decrypted messages should not be possible.

  • Reediting resent message whilst in outbox should not let the user amend the message.

  • ROT13 with no message text GPF.

  • Addressbook is updated whenever a draft message is saved.

  • Searching stalls (when messages have very long lines).

  • SASL fails if there are concurrent outgoing connections.

  • URL displayed on status bar fooled by local-part obfuscation.

  • Lookup functionality when writing emails broken.

  • Pasting leads to crash.

  • Mouse scroll wheel doesn't work in editor view.

  • Special chars \ " ' % in passwords break ISP script setup.

  • Esc to abandon ISP script cleanly in initial setup.

  • Focus unset in script answers.

  • Memory leak with Turnpike universal modem.

  • XP firewall setting may be lost while editing connection details.

  • New connection default name should be unique.

  • Remove/Rename connection unsafe with autoselect.

  • PGP could be uninstalled by accident.

  • Startup Autoselect connection selection untidy.

  • A source of software error 257.

  • Launching scr files doesn't give "executable" warning

6. Change to Turnpike Six v6.02 Distribution

In December 2002, PGP Corp released PGP 8 adding various features including Windows XP and XP Office support. From 31st March 2003 Demon will no longer supply PGP 7 licences with Turnpike.

New customers can still download Turnpike Six v6.02 or Turnpike v5.01 from this website and use it either without encryption or with PGP acquired previously or elsewhere. Customers we previously supplied with both Turnpike and PGP can continue to use them indefinitely and will find the documentation on this website useful.

7. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.02

Turnpike Six v6.02 is a maintenance release with fixes including:

PGP7 Windows 2000 EFS Wipe Vulnerability.

PGP7 PGPnet on Windows XP.

Extra file types added to warning list for attachments that may include executable content.

Binary attachments may be corrupted when sending messages "Content Encrypted".

File types of encrypted attachments not always updated when saved decrypted messages that have been sent "Content Encrypted".

Turnpike incorrectly treats disabled PGP keys as invalid.

When connection statistics fails the timeout is now disabled and a report is logged.

Connect became confused if dialling was stopped during redialling after a linedrop, and you then redialled and connected successfully.

"Reject Message" doesn't always remove addresses from address book.

"Lookup" doesn't work when using the Windows address book (WAB).

Text attachment display did not always show attachment filenames

Turnpike sometimes does not update display when switching between subfolders with same name.

Incorrect information in Demon Trial Account Setup wizard.

Problems with traditional (non-MIME) digest messages when sent MIME-encoded.

Problem forwarding traditional (non-MIME) digest messages.

Some URL fragments incorrectly highlighted as a quote level.

8. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.01

PGP 7

Turnpike interworks with PGP Personal Security version 7.0.3 (not supplied). Users that have acquired PGP 7 previously via Demon or other sources will find help here to implement it with their Turnpike Mail and News software.

Upgrading from PGP 6.5.3

If you have PGP 6.5.3 installed from Turnpike 5 or Six version 6.00 then the installer will be able to replace it with PGP 7.0.3. Just tick the box for the PGP 7 component and the PGP 7 installer will be run to replace your PGP 6.5.3.

Please note that the installer may have to remove PGP and restart your computer before PGP 7 can be installed. In this case you will then have to run the installer again after the restart.

PGP 7 and Windows XP

There is not yet a released version of PGP which supports Windows XP. It is believed that PGP Key Management does work under Windows XP, but PGPdisk is less than satisfactory and PGPnet does not work. When the PGP 7 installer runs it will warn you of the lack of support under Windows XP, but you will have to untick at least PGPnet for yourself.

PGP 7 and Windows 95

PGP 7 works on Windows 95, except that PGPnet can only be installed on OSR2.

Reinstalling PGP 7

If at any time you need to reinstall your PGP 7 installation, then just run the Turnpike installer, from the self extracting .exe. When you choose Repair in the Turnpike installer and have PGP 7 installed, then it will also run the PGP 7 installer.

Compatibility with other mail clients

There has always been a problem when sending encrypted mail to clients that are not PGP/MIME compatible. There are still significant numbers of mail clients that are in this category and so changes have been made to enable Turnpike to be used much more effectively when encrypting to such clients.

It is now possible to encrypt in two ways: "fully encrypt" and "encrypt content". Address book entries can be set which will make Turnpike "encrypt content" by default when encrypting to the associated person, though the default will be "full encryption". The method of encrypting can be set on a per-message basis using the standard drop-down control.

When a message is fully-encrypted and sent as MIME, it will now always be sent as PGP/MIME. This means that the MIME headers as well as the message contents will be encrypted.

When a message is fully-encrypted and sent as non-MIME, it will be sent in the same way as it would have been by Turnpike 6.00 and Turnpike 5. The message text and any uuencoded attachments are encrypted as one block.

As a result, attachment filenames are fully protected in "fully encrypted" messages, though their presence may be guessed at by the size of the message.

When a message is only "content-encrypted", all text and forwarded messages are sent encrypted as one block, but each attachment is sent encrypted individually. Note that this means that attachment filenames are NOT protected by encryption. However, almost any user should be able to deal with "content-encrypted" messages even if their mail client has no PGP functionality at all and they are using standalone PGP.

The use of "content encryption" puts a restriction on messages that can be sent, in that all attachments must be at the end of the message: Turnpike will be not send "content-encrypted" messages which have attachments elsewhere, including those in messages being forwarded.

Note that Turnpike 6.01 will always send MIME-enabled "fully encrypted" messages as PGP/MIME whereas Turnpike 5 and 6.00 would send MIME-enabled simple text messages without using PGP/MIME. This may mean that some recipients report difficulties dealing with messages encrypted by Turnpike 6.01 when they didn't with messages sent by earlier versions. If so, their address book entries should be set to "content encrypt" only.

Keyrings

It is now possible to use Turnpike 6.01 with different keyrings than those used by PGPKeys. This may be useful on a multi-user system when using different workstations.

Turnpike

New login screen, shown in Explorer's right hand pane.

Improved search performance, particularly for Windows 2000.

New icon and ToolTip in classification column to indicate 'unclassified'.

Search of selected messages. Right click on selected messages and click "Search messages...". Search of selection is also available in the "Search in" combo box when the search is invoked via the Tools menu from a folder containing a selection.

Can now save a search over the top of an existing search. Menu item renamed to "Modify Search" (from "Redo Search").

Added "Save Search" button to search window.

Modified behaviour of 'Next Unread'. Now, when 'Next Unread' takes you out of a folder and up to the parent folder, the selection in the parent folder is set to the subfolder you were viewing before clicking 'Next Unread'.

Various list performance improvements (including stopping threading when switching away from a newsgroup).

Messages opened from a search window can now be left open (user is prompted) when the search window is closed.

Bcc: recipients are now shown in the default header for outgoing messages.

The automatic marking threads interesting when they contain the user's own article is inhibited if the article is marked read.

Connect

The Edit Connection Details dialog layout has been changed and an extra control added. A time delay can now be added to the "Redial after remote disconnection" feature.

Access.tpk: Demon.acc corrections to international numbers representation. Addition of new 128K ISDN PoP number.

Modem List for connections: The list of available modems for a connection is built by a new method, which should now include all available modem-like devices. Previously (and TP5 and before) certain ISDN & NDIS WAN devices were not detected. Also some inappropriate devices could be listed, e.g. direct cable serial or parallel connection.

9. What's new in Turnpike Six v6.00

Turnpike Six is radically different from its predecessors. The user interface has been completely redesigned and many new features added. As far as possible, all the functionality of previous versions has either been retained or superseded. However, the changes are such that in many ways Turnpike Six should be regarded as an entirely new product.

The Turnpike 'Offline' application has been replaced by a Turnpike extension to Windows Explorer (henceforth "Turnpike"). This means that your Turnpike folders now appear in the Windows Explorer folder tree alongside My Computer, Network Neighbourhood and the Recycle Bin, instead of appearing within a separate application.

The Turnpike 'Connect' application remains largely unchanged, but where Connect and Turnpike are installed on the same machine almost all of Connect's functionality is now available from within Turnpike. In particular the 'Deliver' toolbar button will connect you to the Internet, send and receive mail and news and then disconnect, all in the background. You will be provided with a 'taskbar tray' icon (next to the clock) to indicate that Turnpike is connected to the Internet, and by right-clicking on this icon you can show the full Turnpike 'Connect' application.

For further information on usage of Turnpike Six see either the application help or the Quick Start Guide - both of which are accessible from the Help menu. In addition we have provided a document with specific information for users migrating to Turnpike Six from an installation of Turnpike 5 or earlier. Turnpike can still however be launched via its desktop icon or via its entry in the Start Menu.
