Streaming Benefits and Quotas

You can stream video and/or audio from your website in any of the following formats: Real Video, Real Audio or MP3, or you can even join our beta trial to stream QuickTime. You can have as many of these files as you like on your website, but please see the Quotas section further down this page.

The benefits of streaming from your website

Improve visitor experience by minimising start-up delays:	Visitor starts seeing or hearing your video or audio soon after clicking.	Visitor has to wait for entire file to download before being able to view it. Visitors may get bored with waiting, and move on.
Use less of your website bandwidth allowance:	If a visitor decides the content isn't what he is looking for and finishes viewing, the stream stops.	The whole file is downloaded whether or not the visitor watches it all, using up your bandwidth allowance.

Quotas for Streams, Disk space and Bandwidth

All of your media files count towards your total disk space allowance. For more information on your disk space usage, please see the 'Quota usage' section of your control panel. You may purchase extra web space for these files by upgrading your account to Shared Hosting Standard.

The Homepages service allows two concurrent streams per account. This means two people can view media streams from your site at the same time. If a third person tries to view a stream on your site at the same time, they will not be able to do so until one of the other two streams has finished playing.

The files that are streamed from your site will count towards your monthly bandwidth quota. For example, if you have a 1MB media file that is viewed 100 times in a month then it will use 100MB of your total bandwidth allowance. For more information on your bandwidth usage please see the 'Quota usage', 'Statistics' and 'Access Logs Analysis' sections of your control panel. If you are expecting large numbers of visitors to your website you may purchase a larger monthly bandwidth quota by upgrading your account to Shared Hosting Standard.

Live streaming

The Homepages service does not permit live streaming. This means you cannot use the Homepages streaming server as a proxy for a live Webcam.

QuickTime streaming

QuickTime streaming is undergoing beta trial. For QuickTime streaming you must include a “hint” track. This can be added with Apple QuickTime Pro software. For more information please visit the Apple website .
