Setting Up Your Website

How do I set up my Homepages?

To set up your webpages using the free 20MB of webspace that you receive with your Demon Standard Dial-Up, HomeOffice Broadband or Premier Connect Plus Dial-Up account, you will need to write your own HTML files using an HTML Editor. We have included links to some useful tutorials to help you to find out more about webpage authoring. A self-help newsgroup, demon.homepages.authoring can be used for this purpose as well.

Support is only available relating to use of the service. No support will be given for HTML authoring or page design.

How do I get my Homepages on the web?

This is achieved by connecting to the server homepages.demon.co.uk using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). The password will initially be the same as the one you use to connect to your Dialup or Broadband service, but you can set a separate password for your website via your control panel.

If your homepages web address is http://www.sample.demon.co.uk and/or your email address is someone@sample.demon.co.uk, then use "sample" as the username in your FTP client software

There are two main types of FTP interfaces available:

- FTP client software. This includes (for Windows) WS-FTP, CuteFTP, Terrapin FTP, and (for Macintosh) Fetch & Anarchie. Click here to free trial a fully functioning Terrapin FTP Browser to upload websites. Defaults are optimised for Demon Homepages and the software includes a link checker. WS-FTP guidelines and Dream Weaver guidelines are available.

- It is possible to use your web browser as an FTP client. Simply enter the following information in the address bar at the top of the web browser and you will be presented with an interface similar to the drag and drop utility within Windows Explorer:
ftp://sample:password@homepages.demon.co.uk where "sample" is your account name (see example above)

Then upload your pages into the docroot folder.

Other FTP client guidelines are also available.

An FTP session is just a command line in a terminal session where you type "ftp". These include the MS-DOS prompt in Windows95 (when Dial-Up Networking is configured), a terminal login on an internet connected network or the Ka9q-based DOS and Amiga software.
