Image Libraries

To help you get the most from your homepages, we have provided you with some ready-made collections of images that you can use within your own pages. These collections are stored on the homepages server.

There are two collections of icons:

and two sets of background images and textures:

Please be sure to respect the usage conditions of these images.

When using these images, do not copy the files to your own homepages, but use an absolute reference to the graphic you are including instead.

This is done by giving the complete URL to the image you want to use on your page, for example adding the line:

<img src="http://www.homepages.demon.co.uk/icons/stanford/ball.blue.gif">

to your page will produce this ball:

You must specify the complete URL when including images from these libraries. A handy way to get the complete URL for an image is:

  • Netscape: hold down the right hand button on the image and select 'Copy Image Location'
  • MSIE: click the right hand button on the image and select 'Properties'. Highlight the image URL in the dialogue box and press control-c to copy it

Using this method of referencing the graphics means that you do not need to have the actual files on your own homepages, giving you more space for your own files, and means that the graphics will be cached more effectively, speeding up accesses to your pages.
