Common Troubleshooting Tips

Before contacting the helpdesk with any connectivity problems, please check the following:

  • You have been advised your line has been converted for ADSL
  • All the equipment is switched on
  • Microfilters are connected to all sockets which are using telephones
  • Your ADSL equipment is connected to your computer?

USB Modems:

  • Check your phone line for a dial tone. If there is a problem with your phone line you will need report it directly to BT.
  • Ensure you have entered your connection name and password correctly, these details are case sensitive
  • Check the status lights on the USB modem against the manufacturer's instructions. (Make sure both lights are solid green for a period of at least 15 seconds to ensure that you are powered up *and* synched with the BT exchange.)
  • Ensure your operating system supports USB or the USB port has not been disabled.
  • Uninstall and reinstall your modem drivers. Please ensure you have correctly installed the drivers and installed any required driver updates from your supplier's website.
  • Shutdown and power off the computer which your modem is connected to, disconnect the USB modem, then reconnect the modem and start up your computer.


Routers:

  • Ensure you have entered your connection name and passwords correctly in lower case.
  • By lifting the handset on your telephone, check for a dial tone. If there is a problem with your actual phone line you will need report it to BT by dialling 151
  • Ensure all relevant settings as detailed in the settings and information document have been entered in the correct location
