How to use Terrapin FTP

If you have not yet installed Terrapin FTP, please see the Installation Guide.

Once Terrapin FTP is installed, you will have an icon on your desktop labelled My Demon Website. Terrapin FTP collected your username and password during the installation. It would have automatically added homepages.demon.co.uk as the server to upload to.

Open Terrapin FTP by either double-clicking on the desktop icon or, choosing it from the

Start > Programs > Terrapin FTP > Terrapin FTP
You should then see a panel similar to the one below.

To make use of the 30 day free trial of the Terrapin FTP software, click Continue. The content of your Demon homepages will remain live when the Terrapin free trial ends, however to upload new pages or changes to your Demon website after this, purchase a licence by clicking Register. After you have purchased a licence you may Unlock the software to recover full functionality. You may Register and Unlock the Terrapin FTP software before the 30 day trial has ended if you wish.

You are now connected to the Demon Homepages server. You are ready to upload your website from your computer to the Demon homepage space visible to other Internet users. For help on creating a website, please see our Tutorials page.

The window is split into three horizontal sections - the top section shows the FTP connection status and messages from the FTP server, the middle section shows the directories and files on our FTP server you are connected to, and the bottom section shows local directories and files - i.e. those on your own hard disk.

To transfer files, all you have to do is drag the files from one section to the other, whether downloading or uploading them. The picture above shows the direction required to upload to your Demon Web space.

Try it for yourself

If you don't have a webpage ready to upload, create one now by copying and pasting the following into notepad, or text editor of your choice:

Save this as index.html

Upload the file to your demon homepages space using Terrapin FTP. Next view it by typing http://www.your-hostname.demon.co.uk into your Internet browser, making sure it's all in lower case.
