The importance of bandwidth

When you own a website, bandwidth is one of the most important technical issues you will have to deal with. In essence, bandwidth is the capacity of your portion of cyberspace: the amount of room your service provider grants you in order to host your site.

Every time someone visits you, they borrow a part of your bandwidth in order to view your site. Therefore, the number of visitors you get, and the size of the files (pictures, text and others) that they are viewing, determines what level of bandwidth you require.

If you already have a site, taking a look in your server logs will give you an idea of how many visitors you get, and how much of your allotted bandwidth they are using up. This will help you decide whether you need to upgrade or downgrade your existing package – which can be done at any time if you’re one of our customers.

The Demon Homepages hosting package – with which all users can create their own personal Web space – offers 150Mb of bandwidth a day, which should be enough for most small, personal sites. If you are running a commercial operation, however, you will almost certainly need more.

Many companies choose to use their own servers – we offer Web Co-location, which lets you build a server as you see fit and then host it in a secure centre.
