THUS plc today announced that is it has signed a contract with Manchester City Council ( MCC ) to provide an enhanced managed communication solution that will assist the council in its drive to achieve targets set out by the e-Government initiative. As part of the solution, THUS has deployed a resilient high speed Internet service which feeds into MCC 's corporate network, and is also managing the council's Internet security systems and application and hosting servers.

THUS was chosen as MCC 's preferred Internet supplier after a competitive tender against other major telecoms companies and ISPs. The THUS managed solution is providing MCC with secure corporate and hosted Internet gateways, giving users superior email access and connectivity to approved websites through a Internet connection. A number of corporate dial ports have been supplied to enable MCC 's employees to securely dial into the corporate network remotely. In addition, the platform is providing the city's libraries with faster Internet access and increased bandwidth to the web. This will improve the city's learning facilities and enable citizens using library computers to benefit from quicker access to information online.

The professional services team at THUS initially migrated MCC to its own Internet solution and is now managing operational support for MCC 's firewalls and servers. The THUS managed solution will include proactive monitoring and performance management of all hardware, operating systems and components on hosting platforms, and checking web content for viruses and infected files. Capacity planning will be provided in order to shape and guarantee the appropriate levels of bandwidth on the system. 24 hour support is also available to MCC , 365 days a year, to assist its internal IT support team and THUS will be involved in future disaster recovery planning.
