THUS invests in renewable energy and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 4,000,000 KG THUS plc today announced that it has secured a supply of renewable energy to power 33 per cent of its site portfolio, a total of 80 locations. This constitutes three quarters of the buildings where THUS can control the energy supply. THUS calculates that it is now preventing almost four million kilograms of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere, the same volume produced by making 289,611,952 cups of tea or driving 6,660,355 miles at 30 miles per gallon. This achievement is a result of the ongoing Energy Management Strategy that THUS started to implement in 2001 in consultation with energy management experts Energyquest. The reduction contributes to Government targets to reduce the UK's carbon emissions by 15 per cent from 1990 levels by 2008. Phil Male, Chief Operating Officer, commented: "We take our responsibility to the environment and the local communities where we operate very seriously. We are proud of the success of our energy management strategy, which has seen emissions of harmful carbon dioxide fall dramatically. This is a real achievement in a market where the supply of clean energy lags behind demand. Not only is this strategy helping us meet government guidelines for reducing emissions, it is also helping to control energy costs within the business." The need for companies to reduce the volumes of greenhouse gases that they emit into the atmosphere continues to be a matter of public concern. Scientists and politicians are increasingly recognising the dangers of global warming and the part that greenhouse gases play in climate change. At the end of April Tony Blair launched The Climate Group, a coalition of businesses and governments that will seek to reduce the levels of harmful gases emitted globally. |
